The State Creates the Story

Why Nervous System Regulation Is Key 🧠🌿

As a coach, I spend a lot of time with clients deepening awareness. We explore mindset, feelings, inner narratives, and possible reframes. That work matters. A lot. And there’s another layer of exploration that’s critical if we want to create real, sustainable shifts —and it’s one that many people don’t fully understand.

Here it is: our beliefs are driven by our physiological state.

👉🏻 Yup.

And, our bodies send far more information to our minds than our minds send to our bodies.
Maybe you’ve heard this phrase often attributed to Peter Levine and Deb Dana:

”The state creates the story.”

It’s easy to assume this is a metaphor. It isn’t. It’s a physiological truth.

Change begins in the body, specifically in the autonomic nervous system. Before thoughts form or meaning is made, the body is already signaling through breath, tension, rhythm, and arousal. The brain organizes those signals into narrative, largely based on past experience. This becomes especially visible in times of stress.

🟢 When the nervous system is regulated, perception widens. We can feel safety, connection, curiosity, and nuance.
🟠 Regulation doesn’t mean being calm all the time. Anger, fear, urgency, or mobilization can be appropriate responses.
🔴 Dysregulation is when our internal state doesn’t match what’s happening now. It’s when activation or shutdown unnecessarily persists & the body keeps signaling danger.

When we’re  dysregulated, our access to perspective and problem-solving shrinks.
This isn’t a failure of insight.

It’s physiology.

Here’s a key point:

We can’t think our way into regulation. We feel our way there.
This is why approaches that emphasize embodiment matter. Top-down methods do support us, but if the body’s tension patterns remain unchanged, our capacity to truly shift is limited. What’s held in the body keeps us tethered to the old story.

When we work with sensation, tension, and allow stuck emotion to move, something begins to soften. Parts of us unfreeze. What was unintegrated can integrate. And the story has space to change.

In moments of pressure, whether in leadership, relationships, or transition, it’s not about finding a better story.
It’s about tending to the physiological state from which any story arises. From there, the options change.

Sometimes this can be very simple. Taking a moment to:

✨pause and breathe
✨feel your feet on the ground
✨ orient to where you are and what you are feeling

When stress is chronic, it can take much more. But every little bit helps and so does regular practice.

Regulation isn’t abstract.
It’s concrete.
It’s physical.
It’s foundational. 🙏🏻
